As the world slowly begins to open up, the virus is still out there and you need to take extreme measures in order for you and your kids to be safe. The horrendous pandemic has unfurled like wildfire over the past few months, and though counties have slowly begun to reach stage 3 and above, you and your loved ones still need to be cautious. Ask yourselves “What can my kids and I do everyday to ensure that we stay safe?” Below are 10 things to do in order to ensure that you and your kids are not infected by the COVID-19 virus.
1. If you hear your kid sneeze or cough, take action!
It’s easy to undermine the slightest cough or sneeze, or even when your kid tells you they have a headache in order to evade going to school. Unfortunately the times have changed, you will never know if a cough is due to choking on water or a symptom of Covid; you’ll never know whether your kids headache is psychosomatic or an upcoming fever. So avoid the anticipatory anxiety and take action. Keep your loved ones at home and check their temperature often, and contact an on call nurse. These actions will not only prevent others from falling ill, but also protect your child from the infectious environment.
Masks are yours and your kids’ best friends
2. Emphasize the importance of wearing a mask, and carrying one just in case
Nowadays masks are yours and your kids best friends. Yes masks are incredibly uncomfortable, and can be lost easily, that does not change the fact that they can save your life. If the masks you own are uncomfortable, it probably is not the right size, or material. To read more about what kind of masks you should wear CLICK HERE. This is the question you should be asking yourself: are cloth masks good enough for me or my child? There are other masks that are far more better than just an ordinary cloth mask. Try to see if you can get hold of a KN95 mask that is a lot more effective.
3. Check your kids temperature

4. Give your kids 2 water bottles
One of the fastest ways that Coronavirus can spread is through saliva, and unfortunately kids love to share. After all, sharing is caring, but not anymore. Give your children 2 water bottles in order to evade them sharing with other children. Once the tiresome school days begin, your kids will have a backup of water. Remind your children not to use the water fountains around school, as they are full of germs and possibly even COVID-19.
5. Emphasize the importance of Hand sanitizer, and even give them a bottle
The reason that hand sanitizers are out of stock in all major stores is because the alcohol in it kills the lipids that protects the virus, which in turn destroys the virus. Sanitizers are crucial during this period of time, especially if people don’t have access to washing their hands. Reinforce the importance of using hand sanitizer after your child touches anything. Another common question asked is “Should I wear my gloves in my regular work place/school?” Even if you do use gloves, make sure you and your child sanitize or wash their hands after you use them.
MOST IMPORTANT! Confide in your kids
6. Encourage your children to speak up
Children often have a hard time saying no to their peers. For example, if your child’s friend is dying of thirst, your child will most likely share their water with them. This would generally be looked as a selfless act, however, now it just endangers not only your child’s friend, but also your child. Teach your children how to say no to certain situations that will put them and others at risk. To do so, give them scenarios, such as the thirsty friend in need of water. In fact, play out the scenario. Ask your child for water and if they offer you their own mention how you might be sick, and see how they react. Doing this often will encourage your children to say no, but politely.
7. Explain that the virus can affect anyone.
Yes the virus spread from China, but that does not mean that every Chinese person has the virus. The truth is, that this virus can affect any race, gender, age and sexuality. Make sure you don’t influence your children with your views as they can possibly put them in danger.
8. Teach your kids the proper way to wash their hands
Soap does the same job as hand sanitizer, in fact it’s more effective.
9. Enforce no touching of hands to face
Your kids hands have the most germs and could possibly even contain COVID-19, touching their faces without washing them properly could result in the virus going directly into your child’s system. Enforce washing hands as it will save your kids life.
10. MOST IMPORTANT! Confide in your kids
This is a stressful time for everyone, it can cause depression and anxiety, even in your little ones. Talk to your children, tell them your emotions. This will encourage your kids to feel as though they can confide in you. During quarantine, you and your kids are spending all day together. This means that communication is key, be there for them, support them through all feelings, and they’ll do the same for you.
Make sure to follow these 10 steps and keep you and your kids safe!
